Windy MCQP party left sand rather than stars in my eyes (19-Dec-04)

The man who came as Lawrence of Arabia was the most aptly dressed to cope with the sand storm that ruffled more than a few feathers at the MCQP Jungle party held at the Artscape Founder's Garden tonight.

Even had the night been still and barmy, the sandy location, more fairground than garden, was a disappointment. To my expectant eye (more dilated than usual to take in the happy splendour of the event) the magical themed spaces which were a big part of the attraction at these annual costume parties in previous years seemed slapdash.

The only things that made it worth while at all were the fabulous costumes and being with people in a happy space. Obviously MCQP founder and organiser Andre Vorster cannot be held responsible for the wind but inclement weather in Cape Town is a reality that should be better considered.

A visit to Notorious and a meal of beefy veal (16-Dec-04)

I did say I'd hung up my dancing shoes in my last entry, but last night I found them again. I was invited, along with members of my book club, to Notorious in Bree Street where Club Vogue used to be years earlier.

I didn't know until I was inside that Russell Shapiro of Manhattan and Broadway fame was involved in this venture – always an indication of success.

I note that expense has been spared wherever possible and, in sharp contrast to Hemisphere, the interior is obviously not the focus.

Hemisphere opens high-up over the City (14-Dec-04)

A new sundowner-lounge and nightclub was launched last night on the 31st Floor of the ABSA Centre in Adderley Street. Aptly called Hemisphere (www.hemisphere.org.za), it provides a 360-degree birds-eye outlook over the harbour and city - a breathtaking sight.

The event was coordinated by the fabulous Marilyn Thompson of TNT and the guests included some key media - Touchline Media MD Marc Blachowitz, Business Report's Ronnie Morris, gossip-writer Hilary Prendini-Toffoli, Heather Parker (Media 24 magazines) Donald Paul editing The Property Magazine, Toni Younghusband from Shape, the ever-dapper Daniel Ford of Schrieber Ford Publishers with his partner Grant Schrieber, Cape Argus news editor Joseph Aranes and the gorgeous Justine Drake among them.

There was also a smattering of PR-types, Kim Saville (KSP Word), Glenda Nevill (HWB) and Marcus Brewster (MBP) but the real coup that Marilyn achieved, to my mind anyway, was to get the cream of Cape Town's black elite. I regret that I cannot name-drop here as I don't know them, but if the natty suits, high-end watches and big-money demeanor is anything to go by, they were present in abundance.

ABSA lambasted as Internet Banking goes down (02-Dec-04)

My fingers are dipped in vitriol. The sound of my angry fingers on the keyboard hitting hard in tempo to Brenda Fassie is some indication of how miffed I am. There has been a problem with ABSA Internet Banking. Obviously one of those sad grey-shoed types who work in the Bellville Credit office allowed someone a little more leeway on their overdraft than the SYSTEM allowed which crashed the whole thing. Come to think about it, the possibility of the grey-shoe doing anything the SYSTEM doesn't allow does not exist.

Whatever the reason - not being able to access ABSA Internet is not only frustrating for me but also for people waiting to be paid. Here's the rub. We all have off days (God knows ABSA has loads of them) but what irks me the most is the appalling lack of communication around the problem.

If, like I am, you're an amateur techie, the first conclusion when technology doesn't work is that it is our fault. Now, if ABSA had put a message on the homepage saying - "We have a problem, the grey-shoed folk in credit have thought out-of-the-box and crashed our system" I would understand. However, with no such "help - we're drowning message" on-line nor on the phone, people such as I are left to think the problem is ours and format our computers and reinstall.

The Humour of Panic (01-Dec-04)

Is it rude to find humour in other people’s anguish? Yeah, but it made my day. I’d stick to SAA if I were you.
