Things to eat and a free head rub (25-Oct-05)

Hurricanes aside, it's been a whirlwind being back. I've dined at some of the hotspots - Haiku (v nice but pricy), Castle Hotel (nice), Grande Cafe (v nice) and Meerendal (should be v fab when Wheatfields opens in the next few weeks.) I've also visited old favorites - like Cafe Paradiso. I really enjoyed the Chicken salad Paradiso which has also made it into Amex's Black Book guide of things to do in Cape Town. I tasted the crab cakes which were delish and enjoyed the snoek and avo starter but could have (and, frankly should have) done without the ricotta lemon cheese cake which didn't deliver.

One of the most memorable dishes I've had this month was at One Waterfront at the Cape Grace. Even though it was part of a Press Club set menu, the roasted oxtail was sublime. I've always loved oxtail and only ever had it in a stew. This was dry-roasted and the meat sticky and delicious. The most healthful meal, save for Saturday lunch at the 12 Apostles' Cafe where I had a fabby med low-cal omelette followed by the most fabulous low-fat dessert yet - frozen coco cake - was at the River Cafe on Uitsig. The Health Breakfast offering is a delight to look at, beautifully arranged slices of fresh fruits with, here comes the rub, a yoghurt terrine. Divine.

Edelman PR study says 62% trust other bloggers more than a company's own PR (07-Oct-05)

Steve Rubel's Micro Persuasion blog http://www.micropersuasion.com/2005/10/edelman_48_of_b.html reported on Edelman PR's study of 800+ bloggers. Rubel felt that the most interesting stat was that 48% of the bloggers had no interaction with the PR community. For me it was the affirmation of using the blogosphere  to assert one's authority.

70% said they wanted to receive freebies from companies with a view to blogging about them, when asked to score from 1 (no trust) to 10  if bloggers trusted material from PR companies the score was 4.6 while bloggers scored 5.5 when asked about the degree to which they trusted material from companies themselves.

139 respondents said they trusted content by an individual's blog over a company's blog. As I expected, 62% said they trusted other bloggers more than what a company said about itself - proof that the ticket to the reputation game is still third-party endorsement. https://extranet.edelman.com/bloggerstudy/. Reputation managers who don't read this study needn't bother going to work.

MCQP is a Haiku to fabulocity (07-Oct-05)

In an evening brimming with fabulocity I visited the uber-chic new gay bar - Cruz which On Broadway previously occupied, met the new team behind the MCQP party - which, after last year's blow job of the worst kind, I was sworn against and dined at the delicious Haiku - the subject other than which I hear nothing.

The theme for MCQP 2005 is Circus - which was probably better suited to last year's sand-swept debacle. In fact, had the fabulous Sheryl Ozinsky not invited me personally, I would not have attend the launch. I'm very pleased I did, though, as Peter Hayes, even more fabulous than the aforementioned is creative director, and along with Raymond Bloom and his partner from Samurai; the gorgeous Igon (who looks fabulous in a grey pin-striped jacket with trousers) and runs/owns Cruz, Opium and Pulse, Henry Shields of Green Dolphin and Marimba fame will ably fill Andre Vorster's, as Hayes put it, very high heels.

The venue is Ratanga Junction which I think will be fabulous. Mandy Neale-May accompanied me to the launch - it was such fun having a woman date and an almost exclusively gay male event. With the exception  of Hilary Prendini Toffoli - sporting a sharp haircut and wear camo! pants (obviously trying to fit in with the he-men and he-women) most of the crowd were way under 50 and excited to bits at the good news.
